October - November 2018
TOOLS
Figma, InVision, Prott, SmartMockups, My Google Drive, all the notecards and sticky notes
RESPONSIBILITIES
Competitive Analysis, user interviews and testing, sketching, wireframing, UI design, prototyping
OVERVIEW
According to a 2018 BBC news article, there is an estimated 170K words in the English language. With the rise in slang that makes the number all the larger.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Users need to easily access and comprehend words and phrases commonly used in their daily lives so that they feel empowered by the conversations they have with others.
POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS
Make an app that provides a platform for users to feel empowered by:
1. quizzing users
2. tie words and phrases to real-world events
3. help users feel supported by an online community

USER CENTERED DESIGN PROCESS

FIRST THING'S FIRST - COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS
It's important to check out the competition! The pros vs cons, as well as observations, were collected for three different flashcard apps: Flashcards+ by Chegg, Quizlet and Flash Cards GO.
GETTING TO KNOW THE USERS
Users experiences were gathered based on what they were doing, feeling, and thinking. The majority of the users were interviewed in the gorgeous Marin Headlands in the SF Bay Area. Here it was discovered that users want to have a solid contextual connection to new words they were learning.

CREATING THE PROTO-PERSONA
Using the insight gathered from user interviews, a proto-persona was generated. Quinn who is in their early 30s; they want to feel empowered by the conversations they have with others.
USER FLOW
Based on user interviews and proto-persona characteristics, two discrete tasks flows were identified:
1. Create a vocabulary card.
2. Review a current event to gain a contextual understanding of a vocabulary word.

WIREFRAMES AND PROTOTYPE
With the process of rapid wireframing, more mid-fidelity frames were created and connected in Prott to create a rough prototype of Note Life.

USABILITY TESTING
User testing with the Prott prototype was performed with four users ages 25-45. Jakob Nielsen's Error Severity Scale was used to determine the issues with the navigation buttons, and the confusion around the onboarding screens.
NOTE LIFE IN ACTION
This UX Fundamentals final submission serves as a reminder that an application is a living organism and is forever changing.
CHALLENGES
Folks have busy lives! It was a solid lesson to be canceled on, and find new users to perform usability tests promptly.
The time crunch for this project emphasized the importance of continued iterative prototyping.
